The VFR400Z was the VFR400R without the full fairing. It had a small half cowl, twin round headlights and no oil cooler, and it was aimed at riders who wanted a relaxed road bike rather than a race replica. It kept the NC21's aluminium frame, Pro-Link rear end and 16-inch front wheel. For 1987 it gained new colours and the stronger NC24-type engine, and it later formed the basis of the VFR400K training bike.
